Introducing SAFE-THE™, the Safe Trans Housing Extension: a housing survey extension that reduces violence and harassment on college campuses. This tool helps assure safety, equity and choice for new roommates of all genders.

The Problem

  • 24% of transgender students report harassment on college campuses, and 16% leave due to these conditions (1).

  • Transgender people live with constant, crushing minority stress, negatively effecting overall health and wellbeing, the impact of which can be partially mitigated through feeling a sense of institutional allyship (2).

  • College campuses are controlled environments, which allows for reduction of systemic inequities through the use of simple tools.

  • “Housing is a paradigmatic example of a social determinant of health, as it influences and is influenced by structural determinants, such as social, macroeconomic, and public policies, politics, education, income, and ethnicity/race, all intersecting to shaping the health and well-being of populations” (3).

The SOLUTION

The SAFE-Trans Housing Extension (SAFE-THE™) is an innovative tool designed to seamlessly integrate with any existing housing or residential life survey. It asks incoming students their comfort with transgender people and reimports that data, ranking comfort as a top priority. This data is then carefully reintegrated into the survey, ensuring it does not compromise the integrity of other survey components. SAFE-THE assures equitable housing for transgender people, increases safety, and prioritizes the comfort of all students.

All students deserve safety, equity, and choice.

ALL STUDENTS DESERVE SAFETY, EQUITY, & CHOICE.

ALL STUDENTS DESERVE SAFETY, EQUITY, & CHOICE.
